The 2008 Merrimack Valley Cup

Superskills and Breakaway Ice Center proudly announces the 3rd annual Merrimack Valley Cup. The weekend tournament series promises to provide fun, excitement, and highly competitive hockey as well as a showcase of the best hockey talent available in the Merrimack Valley and surrounding areas. Each team at each level will represent the best players from their respective town regardless of where they play during the hockey season. A Merrimack Valley Cup will be presented to the winner of each level and at the completion of the series one town will be named Merrimack Valley Cup Champions. Each town has a tournament director and each coach is responsible for selecting his team.

Tournament Mission:

The Mission of the tournament series is to emulate The Rogers Golf Tournament. The Rogers is a successful tournament that contributes greatly to local charities. Sponsorship revenue derived through the Merrimack Valley Cup will be allocated to the 12 charities chosen from each of the towns participating in the tournament. The players will compete for not only their team but also their town and towns charity, which will foster pride and a sense of community.

The Merrimack Valley Cup aspires to bring together fun, excitement, great hockey and a sense of community.  Each town has chosen a specific "in town" charity to raise money for during the Merrimack Valley Cup.  100% of the money raised is given to the charities at the end of the MVC.  These are smaller charities in comparison to the larger, well-known charities and they are so grateful to the donation that we are able to present to them.

This year the MVC directors have chosen to raise funds in these 3 ways:

1. One large, flat screen HDTV will be raffled off at the end of the MVC tournament (June 26). Tickets will be sold for $10 each during all the weekend tournaments. All profits from the sale of the TV will be divided among the 12 Charities.

2. Submit a business card and it will be put into the tournament program book for the entire tournament for $50.

3. Sponsor your team for $10 and write a message for the tournament program book for the level of your choice.

Eligibility Standards

To be eligible for the MVC at the Mite through Bantam levels all players must live in the town that they are playing for regardless of where and who the player competes for in the regular season. Players that do not live in towns participating in the MVC are not eligible to participate in the tournament. Younger players at the youth levels may play up a year but no player will be allowed to play down a division.

To be eligible for the MVC at the High School level players must play for that town's high school team or, if they play Prep School or Junior, must reside in that town. Men's participants must live in the town they play for or had played high school or town hockey for that town.

Town Selection Process

The selection of teams for the Merrimack Valley Cup is solely at the discretion of the coach and town Director. Breakaway Ice Center and the Merrimack Valley Cup play no role in who is selected to play on the teams or the selection procedure.

The fee to play in the MVC is a team fee. The coach will determine the cost per player based on the number of participants. The coach's roster and tournament fee is due one month before the tournament begins. Players will receive a registration form from the  team's coach. This form needs to be submitted for each player and if under 18 years of age signed by a parent or guardian.

Boundaries for Greater Teams

Salem and Haverhill youth hockey are two associations that provide hockey programs for surrounding town's players. These Greater teams will follow the eligibility guidelines set fourth in the following paragraph.

Greater Haverhill players must live in Haverhill, Atkinson, Hamstead, Plaistow, West Newbury or Merrimac. Greater Salem players must live in Salem, Windham, Atkinson, Derry, Londonderry or Pelham. Atkinson players can play on either team but if both teams would like that player to participate on their team then the player must play for the town where he currently plays. If he is not currently playing for either, then it is where he started playing hockey first.
