MVC Tournament Rules

* Any player who receives a game misconduct for fighting will be banned from the remainder of tournament play.

* Any player who receives a game misconduct will sit the remainder of that game plus 1 additional full game. (The next game)

* Any coach who receives a game misconduct from any game will be banned from tournament play for the remainder of the tournament.

* Any player or coach receiving a game misconduct will have 36 minutes added to their team’s penalty minute total for determining ties.

* In any game in which a player receives more than 4 total penalties he / she will receive an automatic game misconduct and miss the next game.

* In any game that a team receives more than 12 total penalties the head coach will receive a game misconduct and miss the next game with the added 36 minutes of penalty time.

* All other USA Hockey guidelines will apply unless noted.

* The Tournament Director and the Superskills Hockey Director coordinating the tournament have the final say in settling all disputes.

* No timeouts are allowed during the Round Robin. One (1) timeout per team is allowed during regulation in the playoffs.



Three (3) Divisions (4 Teams in each Division)


1) Each team will play 3 round robin games. During those games a team will be awarded “2” points for a win, “1” point for a tie and “0” points for a loss. There will be NO overtime during round robin play.

2) The team listed first on the official schedule posted in the lobby of the rink shall be the “Home” team.

3) The three division teams with the highest point total will advance to the Championship Round Robin. One wild card team will be chosen out of the remaining 9 teams.

4) In the event that 2 or more Divisional teams are tied with points, the following will determine the teams to play in the Championship round robin.

            A) Head to head competition. 

            B) Best plus-minus. Note, there is a maximum of plus or minus 6 per game. 

           C) Fewest total goals allowed in ALL games played during the tournament. 

           D) Least total penalty minutes in all games played during the tournament.

           E) Coin flip



The Wild card team will be chosen using the following criteria. 
         A) Most points.

        B) Best plus-minus. Note, there is a maximum of plus or minus 6 per game.

        C) Fewest total goals allowed in ALL games played during the tournament.

        D) Least total penalty minutes in all games played during the tournament.

        E) Coin flip.



Championship Round Robin


A) In the championship round robin four teams will play 12-minute mini-games. If the game is tied after 12 minutes a four-man shootout will follow. The highest seed will have the choice to shoot first or second. If the game is still tied after 4 attempts the shootout will continue until there is a winner. All skaters must participate before a player is permitted to take a second turn.

Game 1: #1 Seed vs. #4 Wild Card

Game 2: #2 Seed vs. #3 Seed

Game 3: Winner Game 1 vs. Winner Game 2

Game 4: Loser Game 1 vs. Loser Game 2

Game 5: Winner Game 4 vs. Loser Game 3

Game 6: Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 5



Mite and Squirt Penalties

Minors – 1 Minute Majors – 3 Minutes Misconducts – 5 Minutes



Peewee –Men’s Penalties

Minors – 1.5 Minutes Majors – 4 Minutes Misconducts – 6 Minutes



* The NCAA tag up rule will be used for off-sides.



B) If the championship game ends in a tie an additional 5 minutes will be put on the clock. If the game still remains tied a shootout will take place to determine the winner.


* A combined (2 teams) 15 penalties will result in running time until the last two minutes of play. If the score difference is 2 goals or less, the final two minutes will revert back to stop time.

* "Running" time will be used for games with a 6-goal spread. The clock will revert back to "stop" time if the losing team cuts the lead down to 5 goals or less.


* All periods are 12 minutes, stop time.
